The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) conducts measurement flights with a sensor package named “Airborne Cloud Turbulence Observation System” (ACTOS) which is carried through the clouds as an external cargo attached to a rope of 170 m in length. The rope is extremely lightweight (consisting of 5 and 8 mm Dyneema) and due to its small cross-section has a very reduced contact surface. Read more…

Part 21 Minor Changes

Since 2008, rescue bag P/N: 9319X and patient bag P/N: 9320X, manufactured by TYROMONT Alpin Technik in Thaur (Austria), have been in use at REGA Swiss Air Ambulance Ltd.

After 8 years, in 2016, several modifications were deemed necessary and so the results of the direct experience during rescue operations were evaluated and incorporated into an extensive re-design. The new securing system is based on an ETSO C114 belt fixation system integrated in the rescue bag, so the latter can be attached to the stretcher by means of 2 anchor loops.

Other modifications, such as the equipment with so-called COBRA buckles granting quick assembly and disassembly of the belt fixation system, have been certified by minor change approval for combined use with the stretchers of helicopter models BK 117 C-2 (EC145/H145) and AW 109SP.

Addition to “New EC Type Certificate for Rescue Bag”

Image On 4th November 2016, we published the issuing of EC type certificate n° E 7111 of the "TYROMONT" helicopter rescue bag, P/N 922X.

Now we would like to add that the design of the rescue bag by Tyromont Alpin Technik GmbH was developed in close collaboration with the Bavarian Mountain Rescue and, specifically, with the Mountain Rescue Center for Safety and Training (BW-ZSA) in Bad Tölz.

A&H ENG was responsible for the certification engineering.

Moreover, we would like to point out that the newly designed removable braking sail, consisting of just a few grams of cloth and a Velcro strip, proves to be a stunningly effective rotation braking system, deployable for all Tyromont rescue bag models. Watch the video.

The TYROMONT helicopter rescue bag (P/N 922X) is used all over Germany, particularly by the Mountain Rescue’s longstanding partner, the German police aviation department.

Application and certification codes

A&H EQU manufactures customised load lifting and slinging accessories, as well as load-securing and personnel-carrying devices, which are specifically calculated to meet the requirements of all kinds of operations.

Depending on the client or the product, the latter may be used for one or several types of applications which are regulated by one or several legislative texts, EN standards and/or other acknowledged rules of technology, hence different certificates or demonstration documents might be required.

To reduce the amount of text in our product descriptions delivered with the sales documents, as of January 1st 2017 we will start using “Application and certification codes” which can be found on page 8 of AWA part 0 “Table of contents” or delivered as attachment to our tender.

Successful recertification of rescue bag belt fixation system

Image
In 2008, Swiss REGA entrusted A&H ENG and Aerolite AG with the task of designing a TSO belt system which could be integrated in a rescue bag and serve as a securing system for fixing patients onto helicopter stretchers. After initial certification with AW109DV helicopters, the TC was then extended to include also BK117 C1 (EC 145) models.
Picture: anchor sling of TSO-belt, min. Ultimate load: 17.2 kN (16 g)

In occasion of the redesigning process of rescue bag models P/N: 9319X and P/N: 9320X, the belt fixation system has also been newly defined.

The TSO belts, Schroth model, have been modified to meet Rega’s specific requirements and are now equipped with so-called Cobra buckles granting quick, safe and faultless assembly of the belt fixation system.

Safe lashing of rescue bags inside helicopters

Ever more often, air rescue organisations from all over the world ask for rescue bags which, after being hoisted, can be pulled directly into the helicopter cabin and safely tied down to the floor.

Up to now, no safe and certified solution has been found.

AirWork & Heliseilerei GmbH (A&H) and the leading EMS equipment producer Aerolite AG in Ennetbürgen, in collaboration with Tyromont Alpin Technik GmbH, have now joined forces to finally solve this challenge. However, the definition of the interfaces, the positioning and properties of the slinging points on the recue bag and several other aspects have turned out to be tough nuts to crack.

New EC Type Certificate for Rescue Bag

Image
On 31st October 2016, the "TYROMONT" helicopter rescue bag (formerly known as "Bayern") obtained certification as a rescue device. With the issuing of EC type certificate n° E 7111 (German and English), the Suva Notified Body (NB 1246) confirmed that the rescue bag constitutes an approved rescue device in accordance with the requirements of EC directive 89/686/EEC.

Therefore, the device is now marketable throughout all Europe with immediate effect.

After a patient’s recovery, the rescue bag is hoisted up and, thanks to its short sling, can be pulled directly into the cabin (e.g. helicopter models EC 155 or H135).

Certification in conformity with EC directive 89/686/EEC implies that the rescue bag also meets the requirements stipulated in EASA CM-CS-005 on simple PCDS.

On the occasion of
HELI EXPO 2016 in Louisville (Kentucky, USA) A&H Equipment is going to exibit a product innovation.

Our new coupling system for LongLines for transport and construction work (model TLL) or Logging LongLines (model TLP) allows the connection of several ropes, e.g. to obtain rope extensions.  INFO

The advantages are striking:

  • rigid rope connection (no deflections which might hinder precise flight steering with long ropes attached)
  • simple coupling and decoupling without the need for tools
  • coupling performed without the need for additional pieces such as shackles, extensions, etc.
  • current linkage without open or loose cables
  • every single rope can be connected to the low-torque swivel (no additional protective casings necessary)
  • significant reduction in weight and costs
  • and last but not least: optionally, the rope end can be equipped with a suitable primary fitting – for example, for the SKYe SH90 helicopter.

EASA Part 21 G: major change procedure for rescue bag belt fixation system in REGA A109SP helicopters

Since 2009, REGA has been using our rescue bag "Jungfrau, REGA model" (P/N 9319X)1), a tried and tested rescue device equipped with inside TSO belts which act as a securing system for fixing onto the stretcher of A109SP helicopters. Shortly after the product’s launch onto the market, its design was modified to include also REGA EC 145 helicopters (P/N 9320X).2) 3)

After 6 years of successful employment, we have now identified the need to apply several changes regarding the TSO belt fixation system and its positioning inside the rescue bag.

The execution of this project for our client REGA has been carried out by A&H Part 21 G PO (engineering, project lead) in collaboration with Aerolite AG (EASA Part 21 J DO, STC holder), AeroFEM (CVE) and TYROMONT (rescue bag manufacturer).

Related products: rescue bag with EC type certificate, but without inside TSO belts, P/N 9319X1 (in use at Air Transport Europe ATE (Poprad, SK), SMURD (RO), Air Glaciers SA (Saanen and Lauterbrunnen), Rescue Service Zug (CH), Nothern Helicopter NHC, Emden and other).

Annotations:

  • 1) on occasion of the recertification process, the rescue bag has been renamed "TYROMONT" (EC type certificate E 6758/2).
  • 2) P/N 9319X has an EC type certificate as a rescue device to be attached to a winch or a fixed rope. As such, it falls under the category of simple PCDS (EASA CM-CS-005).
  • 3) P/N 9320X has no EC type certificate. However, both models have EASA-approved belt systems (STC) for fixation onto the stretcher of A109SP and EC 145 helicopters employed by Swiss REGA.

Successful launch of slinging device for NH90 helicopters

Image In June 2015, A&H ENG finally delivered their special design fitting for NH90 primary cargo hooks to Airbus Helicopters Germany.

The project was set up in 2011 on the occasion of the Bückeburg Helicopter Forum and its intent was to develop a device able to act as interface to the NH90 Primary Cargo Hook AS 23-series (with a very narrow tolerance range), but also as interface to almost all types of slinging devices.

In fact, this is one of A&H ENG’s strengths: the design of all-in-one devices suitable for every purpose!

Another operational requirement was a safe self-locking fastener which can be closed and opened without the need for tools.

The product was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Isofer AG (CH) and the forging plants pewag austria (AT) and pewag sro in Vamberk (CZ). It is employed in the NATO partner states of Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy.  INFO

SHA takes over the ERFA meeting on the Marshaller Sllabus

Image From 1998 to 2015, Enrico Ragoni, the certified safety expert and experienced marshaller as well as team leader and task specialist for helicopter operations, organized and ran the so-called ERFA meetings on the Marshaller Syllabus. Those meetings were always commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation which, by doing so, offered specialists, junior staff and also members of public authorities related to the helicopter branch a platform for the exchange of experience and opinions, thus greatly contributing to the enhancement of safety during flight operations.

In 2010, Enrico Ragoni announced his forthcoming retirement to FOCA and in the year 2014 the last ERFA meeting under his direction was held.

The Swiss Helicopter Assocation (SHA) will now take over and continue the Marshaller Syllabus ERFA meetings on behalf of FOCA.

The person responsible for the organisation and management is Daniel Kränzlin and a date has already been fixed: the meeting will be held on November 20th, 2015. The location and the topics to be discussed will be communicated later on.

As of now, enrolments can be made by contacting erfa@sha-swiss.ch.

The AirWork team and the writer of these lines wish all participants an exciting and profitable meeting!

New Agenda online

Image We have started preparations for our 2016 agenda and are currently planning our first tours of inspection through Switzerland, France and Germany.

Stay tuned – we would be happy to visit your premises as well and check your work equipment!

The cover photo of our agenda depicts Maria Höfl-Risch in March 2014 while sitting inside the TYRAH AR rescue triangle which is attached to the winch of a REGA A109SP helicopter. As you can see for yourself, even though she had suffered an injury, thanks to the TYRAH AR the ski racer’s sitting posture is perfect.

TLDS+ - a rope full of power!

Image A new generation of ropes for B3 helicopters is born!

The most widely used rope for HESLO with AS 350 B3 Écureuil (Squirrel) is the TLDS 14 kN – virtually a power rope for work horses.

For several years during our development activities, we have been endeavouring to optimise the quality and breaking tenacity (i.e. safety) of load ropes.  INFO     MORE...

Our rescue bag (EC type certificate EG-BMB E 6857/2, CE 1246) successfully passed recertification.  MORE...

For the second time, the EC type certificate for our TYROMONT rescue bag has been extended by a further 5 years. The rescue bag, formerly known as "Jungfrau, REGA model", has meanwhile been named "TYROMONT". In the given context, the term "Jungfrau", the German word for "maiden/virgin", wasn’t understood by all users, while we were obviously referring to the mountain "Jungfrau" in the Bernese Oberland. Furthermore, in occasion of the recertification process, we have officially included the P/N 9319X1 model (without TSO belts used for fixing the rescue bag onto the stretcher of the helicopter) in the type certificate.

The same model is also used by REGA: rescue bag model P/N 9320X, without sling, but equipped with TSO fixation belts on the inside.

This year, we have requested and obtained the 5th EASA Form 1 certification for our horizontal nets HN2 (made of PA cord) and HN3 (made of PES cord) which are now also used by the Romanian rescue service SMURD.

A&H EXP: Helicopter seminar Sellinghausen

Image The helicopter seminar organised by the German Professional Association for Transport and Traffic was, once again, held in Sellinghausen (Hochsauerlandkreis), involving 26 participants and 6 invited lecturers.

3 collaborators from the Winterberg Mountain Rescue Service arrived as new guest speakers, exchanging their experiences and thoughts with the participants on the topics “How to secure persons on steep terrains or roofs” and “The securing of injured persons until the arrival of a rescue squad”.

On board an EC 155, collaborators from the German Federal Police and the Bavarian Police Helicopter Squadron illustrated the correct securing of persons near the open door of a helicopter. The securing of a photographer, in particular, led to animated debate.
